Celebration

Another year gone by and I continue to be surrounded (literally and geographically) by good people. The day was perfect - with a lot of twists and turns: lunch with a dear friend and her baby and baby on the way; Bunco with the girls (where we don't get enough of us to play but we don't even notice because we have so much fun gabbing); dinner with the usual suspects; and divine homemade carrot cake cupcakes with a double layer of cream cheese frosting.

It was perfect.

Good Things

**Some family time Sunday afternoon at the Train park. While I miss my mega-camera, my little PowerShot captured some nice afternoon light and my two nice guys.

**Our living room furniture arrived and we found some barstools that work. The house, despite the flooring issue, is starting to feel more like a home.

**I took Emerson over to the park across the street from our neighborhood and ran into a friend I haven't seen in years. It was instant recognition in that, "Aren't you Lara?" "Aren't you Julie?" kinda way. Her 2 year old and my 3.5 year old said nary a word to one another while we mommies chatted things up, but of course they did the obligatory hug when we all departed. It's so sweet to see little kids and their willing affections.

**A bubble bath, a great magazine and my iPod set to a mellow mix. A perfect way to wind down after a busy weekend.

Books Books Books - A Meme

I found this surfing the net and finding a new blog that I like Katie's Books & Baubles.

What are you reading right now?
Love is a Mix Tape by Rob Sheffield for my book club.

Do you have any idea what you’ll read when you’re done with that?
Actually, I don't!

What magazines do you have in your bathroom right now?
None in the bathroom, but my nightstand holds Real Simple, News Week and Working Mother magazines.

What’s the worst thing you were ever forced to read?
Moby Dick.

What’s the one book you always recommend to just about everyone? The Feast of Love by Charles Baxter or Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

Admit it, the librarians at your library know you on a first name basis, don’t they?
Nope, I am an avid buyer.

Is there a book you absolutely love, but for some reason, people never think it sounds interesting, or maybe they read it and don’t like it at all?
The Giant's House by Elizabeth McCracken

Do you read books while you do other things?
Only if it happens to be one of those glorious times when I have the luxury of reading and dozing and reading and dozing. But as the mother of an almost four year old, those times are rare.

When you were little, did other children tease you about your reading habits?
No, my friends also read. I remember saving a seat on the bus for my friend Barbara and we would each read our books on the way to and from school. Sometimes we would talk about what we read. We were 13 and I guess that was my first book club.

What’s the last thing you stayed up half the night reading because it was so good you couldn’t put it down?
Probably Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat, Pray, Love.

If you are a fellow reader, and you haven't done this one yet, then tag, you're it!

Progress

Emerson had his most recent modified barium swallow study on Oct. 2. We learned that he was sitting pretty comfortable with no decline in ability, but no improvement either. It was because of this, that our Speech Therapist Pamela recommended we challenge him a little bit - oh so catiously - by upping his thickened liquid by two ounces a day in the form of anything other than his formula (aka Kiddie Milk).

The rationale for this is that if we can give him an additional two ounces a day, every day for a month with no adverse side affects, then in November we can add another two ounces per day. With each ounce of thickened beverage that he consumes orally, we can then remove an ounce that he gets via the tube. In a completely perfect world, one could reason that if we could get him, albeit slowly, to consume all of his liquid in a thickened state - with no issues - then we could remove the tube. It's certainly something to work toward.

So last weekend we tried some organic, low sugar juice. Tonight, for the first time ever, Emerson had Grape Kool-Aid. Just two ounces, and he thought it was perfect. "That tastes really good, Mommy."

This is also the first night he agreed to reinstate the toilet for his more complicated waste removal.

Progress, no matter what form it takes, is progress.

Gratitude

Our lives have been eventful as of late; in both positive and not so positive ways. But one ray of light was this fall bouquet and card delivered anonymously and not signed. There was also a balloon and pumpkin pail which Emerson will use for trick or treating. Anyway... I had my hunch, but when shared my prediction was proven wrong. So rather than wrack my brain to figure out who did such a nice thing for us, I am just going to enjoy it.

Thank you whoever you are. Wherever you are.

Things I Miss Most About My Car

I never really thought of me as a real car person. But now that my beloved Highlander is damaged goods sitting at the tow lot awaiting an evaluation...AND...while I am driving a not so beloved Dodge Nitro...I am compelled to make a list of the biggest misses I have for my dear car.

1. Steering Wheel Radio Controls. Despite the sense of luxury, they really are safer than leaning and reaching for the dial. Really.

2. Auto running lights. Every night since having the rental car, T has had to remind me to turn my lights on. I am a hazard waiting to happen.

3. My comfy seats and smooth car-like ride. The Nitro is a bit lacking here being as boxy and stiff as it is.

4. My Sarah Bareilles CD and Emerson's We Are the Dinosaurs - Whaddya Think of That? CD. Thank goodness for iTunes and the ability to reburn cds.

5. My Oprah and Friends XM Channel 156 radio. This is probably the biggest adjustment. Her friends are my friends. They talk about everything I want to talk about. And now it's like they have left for summer vacation and we can't catch up until Fall.

Whirlwind

There's a reason I haven't posted in a month. And that's the whirlwind we have been experiencing over the last 30 days. In these days, T and I have entered our busiest seasons at work, have purchased a home, moved, uncovered a pretty significant flooring problem in our new haven, adjusted to new and mainly better commutes, and not necessarily new and better neighbors, survived a car accident this weekend (me and Emerson) and have lived without any real living room furniture (cozying up to the season opener of The Office on some collapsable camp chairs) - until purchasing some today.

I guess it wouldn't be life if it weren't for the highs and the lows (and the sometimes string of highs and the one-right-after-another-can-someone-give-us-a-break-lows). And there's no better chance for perspective than something horrific like an accident. The universe is telling all of us to slow down and thankfully, oh so thankfully, sparing us this time.

So, as we wrestle with insurance and floor repairs, I am reminded how grateful I am for what I do have - healthy family and friends (some near, some far), a roof over our heads, food in our bellies, and laughter. A lot of laughter.

Birthday Fun

Today we got to take in all the joy and mess of a baby's first birthday. The family celebrated our good friend Will's first along with his proud parents Ali and Dave. Emerson had fun exploring with Will and eating cupcakes too!

Happy Birthday - not so baby anymore - Will!

At 35, I am old

Tonight I am in the check out lane at Old Navy and my cashier appears to be about 22 years old. As I approach with my items for purchase, I notice that he (Chris) is wearing a Snow Patrol t-shirt. As he's ringing things up I say, "Oh, did you go to the Snow Patrol concert?"

He happily replies, "Yes, I did."

"Wasn't it a great concert? They are one of my new favorites," I say.

"Yes, the are really cool and [as he looks right at me] have a real cross-generational appeal."

"Are you saying I am old?" I remark.

"Well, uh, [blushing], I mean...." Chris stammers.

"I'm just giving you a hard time, Chris. I am older than you," I say as cheerfully as I can muster.

It's official. I am now the age that I couldn't ever imagine becoming when I was young and carefree like Chris.

When Toddlers and Scissors Mix

After a lengthy discussion, Emerson now knows the correct answers to the following questions:

1. Who cuts your hair? Miss Alice.

2. Who doesn't cut your hair? Not me!

Big Things

Lotsa big stuff going on in our little corner of the universe...

1. We bought a new house. It's got everything we could want and more. We close on September 21 and can't wait to start calling it home sweet home.

2. Emerson started going poopy on the toilet at home. All he needs is a little privacy (and sometimes some books) and he seems to have it.

3. I have been reading more now than ever and it feels really good.

4. We went to a movie...The Bourne Ultimatum...and loved it.

5. I finished up my postcards for Karen's postcard project. A picture and more on this shortly.

I HEART the World Wide Web

For all the obvious reasons, of course. But for these two very unique ones:

1. The Kind Journal Project.

Over a year ago, I stumbled across a great blog managed by Karen. She's an amazing woman, with an energy that permeates through cyberspace. She's just good people. She's the reason for my Kind Journal tag on my blog--she focuses on the good of things, the good of people, the good of everything.

Well, after being a regular lurker and sometimes poster to her site, she put out a proposal. This idea of hers was to seek interest in her online community of friends to create a Kind Journal. If you signed up for the project, you would be willing to receive the journal at a given point in the process and would contribute one page to it -- whatever you wanted, so long as it was positive and promotes kindness.

How freaking cool is that? So cool and so different, that I signed up.

Well, sure enough the schedule was published and I am second on the list to receive out of 40+ participants. Almost any time in my life (except during the annual holiday gift swap) have I wanted to be picked first or at least in the top 3. This was not one of those times.

My creative insecurity flared up. I wanted the luxury of seeing at least 10 people go before me as a form of inspiration. I hemmed and hawed and flitted and fretted and before I knew it, the Journal was in my hands. As I debated, I took some time out and visited a friend's blog and was immediately inspired and I promptly stole the content from her site (giving credit where credit was ultimately due).

The quote I found resonated with me and was the exact definition of a friendship we all deserve and one I am so fortunate to have in a few dear people. Here is my page (and here's where you can see the Kind Journal as it progresses).

2. The Geniusly Talented Irisz.

Where else other than the WWW could a gal in Arizona stumble across this way cool site, to read an interview by the author of this way cool book and find this super sweet illustration that inspired me so much I had to know who made it. By clicking on the picture of the sweet girl in the rain. I was directed to the site of the woman who created it and she is an illustrator and she lives in Budapest and she does illustrations for a living. And yes, she will make some of Emerson. And, boy did she!

For those that know my sweet child, his mop top hair and crazy cowlick, his love of reading and animals and books and cars and swimming will see that she captured his spirit and has immortalized this little dreamboat at the tender age of 3 and a half.

It's not enough for me to shamelessly brag about how cute I think my son is, but how great she is too. See Irisz's amazing works of art.

Sweet Treat Midweek

Last night Cynthia and I partook in a sweet treat - seeing Snow Patrol perform. It was a pretty good concert and a great venue (not a bad seat in the house and the acoustics are good.)

Better yet, no traffic, parking or walking drama there or back. Amazing, indeed.

If you haven't checked out Snow Patrol, what the heck are you wating for?

Here's their best album, followed by this this close second.

Good Things

KIDDO: Every day on the way home from school, I ask Emerson how his day was. Last week for the first time ever... after he told me about his day, he says, "Mommy? How was your work?" I gushed of course and looked back at him telling him how sweet he was to ask only to have him thrust his finger at me and say, "Look, mommy! I got a booger!"

GADGETS: I got a cool new phone, a Palm Treo! iPhone, shmiPhone. I will wait until a second release...

KIDDO, PT 2: One of my favorite parts of a Saturday is putting Em down for his nap only to hear him reading books. He gets most of the stories right from the sheer fact that we have read most of them 19 million times; but, it's also great to hear him switch things up and put in his own stuff.

MUSIC: Sara Bareillas, Little Voice - Fantastic debut. Artists never want to be compared, but if you haven't heard of her, she's a mix of Fiona Apple and Maroon 5. Interestingly enough she's opening for Adam Levine and the boys on their current tour.

KIDDO, PT 3: You never think you are going to talk so much about poop, but when you have a kid, you surprise yourself. Emerson is fully, daytime potty trained, but Number 2 is another story. He has advanced to knowing when he has to go, but is very embarassed. When the time comes, he discreetly asks for a diaper and to be left alone in his room where he will lie on the floor playing with his cars or reading (so this is where it starts!). Over the past week, though, we have made a smidge of progress...we have advanced to going on the toilet, but while still wearing a diaper. Keeping my fingers crossed this kid won't be wearing Depends in high school.

BOOKS: I am reading something I should - as an adult, as a citizen of our great country - Food Fight: A Citizen's Guide to the Farm Bill. But I must say it's not something I would have picked up on my own. Thanks to Book Club for keeping me current and informed. But the Libra in me needs balance and a little bit of fun, so I am trading off and going back to summer in New York in the 40s and am enjoying Marjorie Hart's Summer at Tiffany.

Discoveries

The past handful of days have been disproportionately focused on work, but in that time I have also uncovered some little gems that bring a smile to my face:

- Podcasts. Okay, I realize that podcasts have been happening for a while but I really kind of just ignored them and figured I didn't need yet another thing to spend my money on. Well, it turns out that I should have been paying more attention. It turns out that every week that I miss Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion broadcast on NPR, I can actually download it, FOR FREE, and get each week's monologue to enjoy at my own pleasure. I have even subscribed, FOR FREE, and will get each week's monologue on my iTunes and, with the ease of syncing, my actual iPod. I am sure that there are a number of other podcasts I would love to get, but I am going to take it easy and savor this new found treat.

- Drive + Play. In other iPod-related news, my friend Scott found a way to route your iPod through your car speakers via your satellite radio. This reduces the need to buy any type of FM transmitter or the like. It works like a charm and I can hear all of my music, or newly downloaded podcasts, while en route anywhere.

- Taylor James. Not to be confused with James Taylor, Taylor James is a female performer who has two albums out that really seem to only be available through iTunes. She's really great and would probably be better classified as a folk singer. I found her through researching some music for a Father's Day mix and I am thisclose to buying both of her albums after previewing her songs.

- Emerson is a couple of pounds and a couple of inches from eschewing his car seat and graduating to the uberbigkid car accessory - the Booster seat. We are thrilled at this prospect and may start stuffing him more to speed up the process.

What new things have you discovered?

June Book Club Broohaha

The second Monday of the month is a most favorite day for me. I get to connect with some great gal pals and dish over usually fabulous food about a usually fabulous book. We were two for two tonight with the tasty food at the Cheesecake Factory and a divine piece of fiction - The Master Butchers Singing Club by Louise Erdrich. It's one of those kinds of books and she's one of those kinds of writers that you instantly want to pick up everything she's written and keep taking her in.

But until I have a bit of a break, we are on to the next selection: The Three Junes by Julia Glass.

Not so Happy Feet

My little piggies needed major attention today. They were haggard and chipping and just deserved some TLC. Off to a new pedi place (which I hearted mucho). The gal loved on my feet and scrubbed the callouses away, brushed on a beautiful, bright, berry lacquer, painted on some darling little flowers that had me saying, aloha and mahalo and it was just what Dr. Scholl's ordered.

Imagine my utter shock and dismay when I just looked down at my precious piggies (click pic to enlarge for full effect)...

I don't even recall the slightest of bumps, swipes or stubs.

Well CRUD

I have become the person I most didn't want to become. No, no, no - not my parents (that's pretty inevitable, right?) I have become a blogging hypocrite. I used to kindly suggest, send friendly notes to some of my dearest blogging buddies, saying,

"Yoohoo. Hey there. I know you're busy, but you should update your blog - I would love to know what's going on in your world."

Funny though, they always read it as,

"Uhm, can you take a minute and update your blog? I am tired of clicking over to it ONLY TO FIND THAT IT STILL HASN'T BEEN UPDATED IN TWO DAYS/WEEKS/MONTHS/YEARS. If it's going to sit dormant, why even have a blog?!?!?!?!"

They say perception is everything.

Anyway, back to my lament. I have turned into the lazy blogger and I have no one to blame but myself. I guess I have been busy (actually, I know I have). It's possible I haven't been inspired (well that's true too). It's come to me in a ray of clarity that I haven't updated my blog for the same reasons my friends often don't udpate theirs.

I hang my head over my keyboard in shame and vow to do better.

The Blessing of Patience

I have never been a really patient person. It's something that's worsened as I have gotten older; the desire for results and immediacy often marring my attitude and view. And then Emerson came along and then challenges between T and me that forced me to slow down and embrace patience. I have had to redefine success and focus on the day at hand not the ones that may come my way. Or may not. It has felt slow--painfully slow--at times. And yet, I know I am on this journey to learn and this is one of the lessons I am to take with me.

So, after much time caring for Emerson and his dysphagia, after training myself that a plateau can be a good thing (it's better than regressing, remember), after reminding myself to walk the careful balance between hope and realistic expectations, we had movement today. Movement to the plus side of the page. Movement that will expand Emerson's diet into a greater realm of normalcy and one that tonight, let him drink from a straw.

Happy Easter!

Easter

Drops of color swirl and glide across our gloved hands
and slowly stain the delicate shells of still-warm eggs.

Two of them tumble to the table and crack;
Your little hands still learning the weight
of delicate and fragile and gentle.

The light comes through the glass and showcases
the beauty of these miniature works of art
you helped me create.

You can't even see the fractures.

It was a great Easter weekend. Beautiful weather, stunning flora and a reasonably cooperative toddler.

Weekend Highlights and Lowlights

* Emerson got a private swim lesson on Saturday due to the mere fact that his three other classmates failed to show up. He was in heaven having Coach Adriana all to himself. His placement in heaven resulted in some spot-on swimming too, and he emerged from the pool wielding his second ribbon - awarded simply for being Awesome.

* A trip to the bookstore, a favorite place of mine, and a well-behaved toddler to boot! Until, that is, we ran into one of his daycare buddies and the two began running and reeking havoc. A quick check out and McDonald's lunch diversion put a stop to, "But I want to wait for David, Mommy!"

* We went to dinner at one of my favorite places for comfort food and for the first time - EVER - I ordered my chicken grilled and not as breaded tenders or as a steak (read: chicken fried steak). This is huge and may need a descripter more important than highlight.

*Picked up everything needed for Emerson's Easter basket, sans the candy and the basket.

*Emerson cried from 10 p.m. - 1 a.m. complaining of an ear infection. It was the saddest thing to hear him pleading to go to the doctor and asking for medicine. Rough night for our bleary eyed little guy. Meds kicking in and some self portrait fun livened him up and we were all asleep by 2 a.m. See below...

My New Celebrity Boyfriend

First, I need to thank Tristin for setting me up on my first celebrity date. This was several months ago and it was a serenade, if you will, by THE John Mayer. I have to admit that I was a bit overwhelmed when he showed up and sang like 12 songs just for me. And they were all perfect and resonating and left me all warm inside and thankful. Not for the results in life, but for the moments, the precious moments that make a life.

So anyway, we really hit it off and all and imagine my devastation that he's actually pretty seriously inolved with someone. And that he sings his songs to millions. Not just me. MILLIONS.

A girl can dare to dream and as I close my eyes in wonderland, let me leave you with one of John's gems...

The Heart Of Life from Continuum

I hate to see you cry
Lying there in that position
There's things you need to hear
So turn off your tears
And listen

Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
No it won't all go the way it should
But I know the heart of life is good

You know, it's nothing new
Bad news never had good timing
But, then your circle of friends
Will defend the silver lining

Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
No it won't all go the way it should
But I know the heart of life is good

Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
Fear is a friend who's misunderstood
But I know the heart of life is good
I know it's good

DUMB - OUCH! - REALLY DUMB

So, I decided that since I had to leave work early today, I didn't have time to do the whole gym workout, but I could go out for a 20 minute walk. It's nice out today and my loafers are comfortable enough. No, no, NO, I do not need to get the tennies and socks that I have IN MY CAR. at the ready. I will be fine. Really.

I take off to go around the half-mile loop of the business park, for which there is no re-entry point along the way. Halfway around, the balls of my feet are on fire. I take off my loafers and walk in the grass along the side all the way back. I returned to my desk with uniblisters stretching across the balls of both feet.

WTF was I thinking?? I have ruined my potential for walking the rest of the week until these heal.

My sweet friend went out to my car for me to get my socks and tennies so I could be semi-comfy the rest of today.

At almost midnight my feet are quietly throbbing. Oh so quietly.

Okay, I am done whining.

Good Reads, Good Site

I received a nice surprise today... an e-mail from a friend of mine that I haven't spoken to in forever, inviting me to join this site called Good Reads. The site enables you to rate and track what you have read, are reading or want to read. Then, like Netflix, you can invite friends and see what they are reading, recommending. You can write reviews or just rate books.

When something like this comes my way, my usual tendency is to go in and account for everything. But, in my new effort toward simplicity, I simply rated the books I have read since November, and have to read in the coming months, per book club. I am going to keep this clean and simple. No matter how much it hurts!

Busy Bee, Busy Me

The last few weeks have been teeming with activities, tantrums, milestones, funny sayings and more. It's only now, as the little one sleeps that I can attempt to recount it all. A list will have to suffice.

**Emerson graduated from being a Little Snapper to a full-fledged Goldfish. The result is bittersweet. Mommy no longer has to get in the pool with Emerson, and Mommy misses that 30 minutes of action-packed, water-soaked quality time. Looking on from the 'bleachers' has its great moments and and ones that keep me longing.

**I survived another crammed work week. Every quarter we get a major project that requires one - three late nights. The good news was that only one was required, and it was a long one!

**Emerson turned the B-I-G T-H-R-E-E. Party at school, party with the family, professional pics (his best ever), and big-boy 'tude. I have heard the terrible twos can take until 4 to subside. Deeeeeeeep breaths.

**I got to reconnect with a childhood friend that I haven't seen since childhood (as in about 30 years ago). How lovely, that she's cool and creative and geniune and down to earth and all the things you want someone from your past for which you have fond memories to really be.

**Tomorrow will be the first day Emerson goes to school fully commando. Okay, not totally commando. He WILL wear big boy underpants and jeans, but no pull up. AT ALL. We are to arm his teachers with four changes of clothes. Let's hope our kiddo isn't the one to think it's cool to wet himself...

Holly Jolly Recap - Stand out moments from 12/25

1. This is the first year that our almost 3 year old is starting to get it. Although, he was more interested in eating the cookie remnants from Santa's visit than looking at the presents Santa left.

2. Wearing comfy jammy pants all day long.

3. Cinnamon Rolls.

4. Bigfoot Memoir, mistakenly wrapped for Emerson when it's clearly adult fare - Chuckle Chuckle.

5. Emerson taking more interest in T's Shiatsu chair pad than his own toys.

6. Patti LaBelle's divine mac and cheese recipe.

7. Walking through the neighborhood and taking some casual family shots with my new zoom lens.

8. A long afternoon nap (and the fact that all of us were able to take one).

9. Getting in some much wanted reading.

10. Talking to family we don't have the luxury of spending the day with and recapping our respective hooplah.

11. Tickle time.

12. Christmas night in the Southwest. High 60s and clear and, well, just see below for yourself...

Happy December

This is one of those poems that, even as an amateur with no publishing experience, I wish I had written myself. It was featured today in The Writer's Almanac with Garrison Keillor.

In the Middle by Barbara Yarrow

of a life that's as complicated as everyone else's,
struggling for balance, juggling time.
The mantle clock that was my grandfather's
has stopped at 9:20; we haven't had time
to get it repaired. The brass pendulum is still,
the chimes don't ring. One day you look out the window,
green summer, the next, and the leaves have already fallen,
and a grey sky lowers the horizon. Our children almost grown,
our parents gone, it happened so fast. Each day, we must learn
again how to love, between morning's quick coffee
and evening's slow return. Steam from a pot of soup rises,
mixing with the yeasty smell of baking bread. Our bodies
twine, and the big black dog pushes his great head between;
his tail is a metronome, 3/4 time. We'll never get there,
Time is always ahead of us, running down the beach, urging
us on faster, faster, but sometimes we take off our watches,
sometimes we lie in the hammock, caught between the mesh
of rope and the net of stars, suspended, tangled up
in love, running out of time.

Love Thursday

I have never considered myself a very religious or spirtual person. While I didn't grow up with consistent attendance to and attention of church, I have regularly thought about faith and what it means to me. What I have come to is faith is extremely personal and for me, centers around the goodness of people, the beauty in the world, that the human spirit is resilient and capable of more than we know and, ultimately, the idea that there is something greater than each of us. I am not quite sure what that greater thing is. I think that's part of my spiritual journey.

As I have gotten older, and specifically - more recently - I have developed an appreciation for crosses. For me, they are a representation of my informal belief system, my energy, my faith. This summer, I picked up a couple of them; a couple of ones that I connected with.

This week, I had the pleasure of getting together with a dear friend of mine, Alison, who took me out for a belated lunch. Always having a knack for getting just the right gift, Alison presented me with this beautiful cross. I was taken aback - at her thoughtfulness and at how beautiful it is. I immediately found the perfect place for it in my room.

This Thursday, I am celebrating faith and friendship. For more Love Thursday, visit Karen's Site.

My Life as a Soundtrack

I got this from Waking Up Late and it is eerily fun and cool at the same time!

If your life were a soundtrack, what would the music be?

Here's how it works:
1. open your library (iTunes, winamp, media player, iPod)
2. put it on shuffle
3. press play
4. for every category below, type the song that's playing
5. for each new category -- press the next button
6. don't lie and try to pretend you're cool

"I Feel the Magic" Belinda Carlisle

falling in love:

The Perils (and Positives) of Being Anal

About three weeks ago I embarked on a project that I knew would test me, would drain me, would crimp my back - Photo organization.

When I transitioned to the mac, close to 3000 of my just over 4000 photos did not transition very well. In other words, they didn't bring the date information over, resulting in an iPhoto file of mismatched mismash. For someone like me, this meant a lot of anxiety.

I am pleased to report, however, that I have finished this ardous task and have my photos properly organized and now I will be able to make photobooks and albums with much greater ease than before. Plus, my archive is now accurate, plain and simple. Here's the breakdown:

For 2004 I have 1,365 photos
For 2005 I have 1,400 photos
For 2006 I have 1,489 photos
I have 15 photos I can't seem to figure out where they go.

I probably shouldn't have taken on the task of dating the pic during the same month as NaBloPoMo, but I did and the former suffered. But I know have a huge weight off my shoulders (and crimp in my back). I also came across one of my top ten favorite pictures of all time...

This process has been at the same time tedious and reflective...allowing me to walk back through the past couple of years and again experience the joy and heartache that occured. Thankfully, there has been more good than bad. More thankfully, I have documented this time and can refer back to it whenever I so desire.

Love Thursday - Thanksgiving Style

Love is...an embrace.

This photo was taken yesterday at Emerson's school Thanksgiving Lunch for families. It was a beautiful day (80 degrees!) and we got to dine outside on traditional Turkey day fixings. Emerson was most interested in the cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and playing with his friend Aidan.

This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for so many things. All of the obvious ones, family and friends, a good job, my health (despite the Whooping Cough), but here are some others...

1. Music - I like having an ongoing soundtrack for my life. Music is celebratory, reflective and therapeutic.
2. Good books. I feel fortunate the the last several I have read have been really good.
3. That while there are many things I want, I truly have everything I need.
4. The patience I am continually embracing.
5. The silliness and wonderment of toddlerville.
6. The help, support, and humor that I get from so many.

A Kinda Big Whoop

Whooping Cough that is.

My bacterial bronchitis proved otherwise, when my doc's office got the result of my bloodwork back today from my visit on 11/14 - WHOOPING COUGH.

The diagnosis is required to be reported to the County, which it was. And the County is required to contact me, which they did. I had a nice long conversation with Karen, of my County's Health Department and after timelining my illness and letting her know who lives with me, and yadda, yadda, yadda I am on my merry way and my loved ones are all on zPacks (including a liquid version for Em).

It's kinda dramatic, me being reported to the Health Department. Like, maybe I should be quarantined or something. Truth of the matter is, I am no longer contagious and am doing much better than my doctor and Karen think I should be doing. I will take that as a Thanksgiving blessing and possible miracle.

Whoop(ing cough) there it is.

Inspired by Christina...

1. I could eat ice cream every. single. day.

2. I can get so caught up in the moment watching the Olympics (during the miliseconds of a race closing) to a game show (the last Survey Says!) that I can actually get choked up.

3. I think Dr Pepper could be the grossest beverage on the planet.

4. If I could live in a state other than the one I am currently living, I think I would pick Colorado.

5. Today, I was able to troubleshoot my own computer problem and fix it. Call me Miss MIS.

6. I can recite the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish.

7. I am wearing OPI Abbey Rose on my toenails, courtesy of an afternoon pedi with Claudia.

8. Story time with Emerson continues to be my favorite part of the day.

9. I have never been to Europe or Australia but hope to before I die.

10. Today I read a short story,Embrace by Roxana Robinson, that for the briefest and most wonderful of moments in the last three paragraphs took my breath away.

Saturday Lunch

Post oil change and swimming lessons for the boy, we joined Tia Claudia for lunch. Here's the lowdown on Zoe's Kitchen:

- Fresh, good tasting food that doesn't make you feel like you ate too much.
- I enjoyed a chicken, spinach, scallion and feta grilled quesadilla with a side of fruit (and it's not your standard melon combo).
- Em had a PB and J with chips. They even cut the crusts off the kiddie sandwiches, making my little peanut all the more happy.
- Claudia had egg salad and a side of Zoe's slaw, which is a vinegar based slaw with feta. MMMMMgood.
- They obliged my picture taking, so we like it even more.
- Average price per person - $6-9. Average kiddo meal - $3-4.

Free Money

I love the free mony that comes from the receipt of a gift card. Many times, it's better than any gift someone could pick out for you and as the recipient you feel a little freedom to experiment and maybe buy something you wouldn't normally, because hey, it's free money!

For my birthday last month, my team at work gave me some free money in the terms of iTunes dollars. I was so thrilled, and so careful to not just go nuts and spend it within the first 24 hours of having possession of the cards. This was very hard for me to do, especially in that I don't even have to leave my house to redeem them and my purchase will provide instant listening pleasure and gratification.

But, I refrained and I held onto them and just tonight (almost a month later!) I redeemed them. As I update my blog and check my e-mail and surf and do all that, I am very pleased with my three purchases (and I still have some money left).

So what did I buy with my free money? Three full albums, which are a bit of a mix:

1. Nothing Left to Lose - Mat Kearney. I just recently became aware of Mat Kearney through the title song of his album, Nothing Left to Lose. It is a great song and if you listen to his voice, he sounds very similar to Chris Martin of Coldplay fame, sans the falsetto Apple's daddy is prone to do. Of course you can preview songs on Itunes, but you can still make poor purchases and this is one I would have been nervous to plunk my own non-free money cash down for. So far, so good.

2. Wintersong - Sarah McLachlan. This is to fill my tradition of purchasing a holiday album each year and Sarah's is actually very good. Traditional Sarah sounding, sweeping and pure and clean. My favorites are Christmastime is Here (which she partners with Dianna Krall), Happy Xmas (War is Over) and Silent Night.

3. Mamas and Papas Greatest Hits. This is one of the best free money purchases because its an album I so want in my collection and on my iPod, but always forget to get it and frankly, when I am ready to cash out, I always am interested in something more current. This is the sweetest of tonight's purchases.

I love my free money!

During NaBloPoMo, I DoWaMyThroHuNoMo

Translation: During National Blog Posting Month, I Don't Want My Throat to Hurt No More!

I might have the worst sore throat in the history of my life. The good news is that my dr. ruled out strep, but gave me a diagnosis of bronchitis. Let me tell you, it hasn't been a walk in the park. I have been attacked by cought fits that have left my throat sandpapered raw. But amidst the irritation my throat, my loved ones and coworkers feel with each hacking cough, there are a number of good things going on, things to celebrate and enjoy:

- I finally figured out how iPhoto works and how it's cataloging my pictures. There's still a lot of work to be done to get this PC to Mac conversion done, but I now can actually make progress!

- Tonight was another great evening of fabulous food and fabulous discussion with fabulous friends over a fabulous book. Book Club continues to rock!

- I am getting better at styling my new 'do.

- A friend of mine just had her second sweet baby - a little boy!

- Another friend of mine is expecting!

- Emerson knows where the stars are - "In outer space mommy."

- I may have officially given up french fries. Trust me, this is a good thing.

- I am down to one or no Diet Cokes a day and have switched to iced tea.

Well that's it. It's a short list, but - hey - it's a list!

Some of My Favorite Books

I just read a column in Oprah's December issue where author Zoe Heller is asked to share books that made a difference to her. In selecting her choices, she makes a point to go away from the books she think she should pick, the ones that people would expect her to pick and go for ones that may be off the beaten path and certainly may not have the distinction of being a classic. I found this approach refreshing because it was truthful and not about appearances and should haves.

While I am an avid reader there are so many books that I 'should have' read by now, classics, pulitzer prize winners, and other notables that I haven't read and quite frankly, I probably won't. But I have read some great ones and will share a list of favorites, a list that exists right now, and could change depending on what I pick up next.

1. The Feast of Love by Charles Baxter
2. White Oleander by Janet Fitch
3. The Brothers K by David James Duncan
4. My Only Story by Monica Wood
5. Marjorie Morningstar by Herman Wouk
6. All Over but the Shoutin' by Rick Bragg
7. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
8. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
9. The Giant's House by Elizabeth McCracken
10. Plainsong by Kent Haruf

What are some of yours?

Negotiations and Love Songs

It started out like a normal Saturday with Emerson waking up far to early for any rational human being. He was his cheerful self until about 6 a.m. and then the whining started. Where the only way he can communicate is through a whine or whimper (read: really annoying). Soon after, he started hitting. Today, we started the rule that hitting is an instant time out and off to his room he went. He was sent to his room twice in a about a two hour time frame. It wasn't even 9 a.m.

With a bit of struggle we got loaded in the car and were en route to swimming class. Fortunately, his chipper personality was back and he did really good attempting to reach the rings along the bottom of the swimming pool floor. As a treat, I took him to one of his favorite places, the drive-thru car wash. Once again, for about 7 minutes, he sat mesmerized as soap and rubber wipers and water swirled around us. We then made a date to meet Tia Claudia at Zoe's for lunch.

He was a delight at Zoe's, noshing on chips and Tia's egg salad and the PB&J sandwich we ordered for him off the kiddie menu. (He even sat patiently as the remade his sandwich with grape jelly - the first had been made with strawberry - which he may be allergic to). He smiled and was charming. Almost acting as though at an audition for the most delightful child in America. Seriously, he was that cute.

Lunch was followed by Costco and then home for a nap. At this point, he had been up for 7 hours and was a bit bleary-eyed. The nap was long - a relaxing 3 hours. I was excited at the delight of spending the reminder of the day with my well rested, well behaved toddler. Unfortunately, that's not what I got.

The whining was now at a professional level and his hitting continued. Two trips back to his room. Nothing, I mean nothing would assuage his frustrations. Each time out is followed with a discussion, in hopes that he can start understanding consequence and that as much as I hate sending him there, I do still love him. We always hug after these incidents; at this age, though, there will be a few of these turbulent times.

After finally getting ready for our evening, we were both standing in the kitchen where he was continuing his rant. I looked at him and calmly said, "Emerson, I need you to stop the whining and talk to mommy in your nice big boy voice." To which the response was a resounding, "NO!" A bit exasperated, I went on to say, "Emerson, you have been such a bad boy today. I just don't know what you want."

His eyes filled with tears and he wailed from the center of the kitchen, "I not a bad boy, mommy! I not a bad boy."

Despite all the frustration, waning patience and exhaustion I felt, it melted away and my heart broke a little looking at my little sweet, sobbing mess in front of me. I knelt down and squeezed him tightly and wiped away his tears. Of course you aren't a bad boy. Of course mommy loves you. Of course.

A bit weary, we piled into the car. I put on one of my favorite cds, Paul Simon's Negotiations and Love Songs and from the back seat I heard a little voice say, "Turn it up mommy."

I guess it's one of his favorites too.

Friday Poem

The pads of my fingers run in rhythmic circles
over each contour of my face.
Thoughts of the day are summarized behind my closed eyes
and the water coming forth is the only sound I hear.

Rinsing removes the debris from my face
and I stand and I stare, analyzing the face before me.
Amid the imperfections, the beauty I am beginning to embrace
Stares back at me.

Love Thursday

Love is the simplest things...

This past weekend we attended a birthday party of one of Emerson's classmates (and perhaps first best friend) who turned three. Sadly this little boy is moving to the 3 year old room at school starting this week. The party had a ton of kids and Emerson was the only one invited from school. As they squealed and giggled and smeared cake across their faces, their beverages were left behind.

Their discards were a flashback for me, although my memory has Capri Sun pouches. I distinctly recall the satisfaction of sucking in all the liquid in an attempt to make my pouch the flatest of all. Tossing it in the trash we would likely return to a highly competitive game of freeze tag. Running and freezing and falling to the grass as laughter flowed freely. Oh, those were my days.

But now, these are his.

You Learn

I had come across this poem years ago and it really resonated with me at the time. Today, as I stumble upon it again, I still have a wonderful connection with it. There are so many lessons woven through her words, that can be of comfort during difficult times, times when we need to live in the moment and not where we have been or hope to go, times when we need to be reminded how resilient we really are.

Comes The Dawn by Veronica Shoffstall

After a while you learn
the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul,
and you learn that
love doesn't mean leaning
and company doesn't mean security,
and you begin to learn
that kisses aren't contracts
and presents aren't promises,
and you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up
and your eyes ahead,
with the grace of a woman,
not the grief of a child,
and you learn to build all of your roads
on today because tomorrow's ground
is too uncertain for plans,
and futures have a way of
falling down in mid-flight.
After a while you learn that
even sunshine burns
if you get too much.
So you plant your own garden
and decorate your own soul,
instead of waiting for someone
to bring you flowers.
And you learn that
you really can endure...
That you really do have worth.
And you learn and you learn...
With every goodbye you learn.

Weekend Recap

It's been a whirlwind of a weekend and a good one at that. It kicked off with one tired, sleep-deprived and sore throat starting mommy. Now it's Sunday, and while I still feel groggy, the throat is better (thanks to some good meds). Here's the weekend in review:

- Friday night. E and T and I join Tia and Scott for Pizza dinner. Emerson is his charming self and I end up with pizza sauce on my sleeve thanks to the boy.

- Saturday T and E and I attend one of E's friend's b-day parties. Emerson has a ball and one of the biggest bagels ever - see below - and cake and cookies and ice cream and winds up with a massive sugar high that proves detrimental when we try to do a family dinner out later that night (read: Crabby Crabbenheimer).

- Despite crabbiness, masters riding his tricycle - the one we got him almost a year ago. He's so cute on his bike and he only wiped out once.

- Sunday morning we go to the zoo and Emerson does his first Tram Ride. Does pretty good but loses interest pretty quickly.

- Mom sets up new iPod with no trouble - gotta love Apple for that userfriendliness!

- E and T and me all go to Target this evening and Em gets a helmet for trike riding, giggles and laughs throughout most of the excursion.

We are all wiped out, but it's the good kind of tired. The exhaustion and contentment from spending time they way you wanted to with those most important to you.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The Good
1. My little boy's laugh. He's getting to the point where he actually cracks up and it's so cute.
2. My new 30GB iPod. It's Black. It's Sleek. It's Hot.

The Bad
1. I have to go back into the office at some point this weekend because I forgot to print off some stuff to read in prep for a meeting Monday morning. CRAP.

The Ugly
1. My possible strep throat. UGH.

Imagining My Grandkids

One night this past week I almost became a grandmother. Funny thing is, my kid's not even 3. Here's how I found out.

He: My daughter.

Me: You have a daughter?

He: Yeah.

Me: What's her name?

He: Lelly.

Me: Lelly?

He: No, Lellypop.

Me: Lollipop?

He: No, mommy. Lellypop.

Me: Is she pretty?

He: No.

Me: Is she nice?

He: Yes she nice and she hold hands.

Me: Is her hair black?

He: No, green.

Me: How old is she?

Silence

Me: Is she older or younger?

He: Younger.

Me: Do you know what that means?

He: Boooooooo.

And that's all I know about my granddaughter.

Love Thursday

Through surfing and coasting, I have come across what appears to be a small but wonderful blogging tradition in a small corner of the blogging world - it's called Love Thursday. From the few posts I have seen about it, it appears to be taking a day each week to celebrate love - in whatever mode or format you desire. Started by a woman in the Caribbean, it seems to be a beautiful tradition.

Just like beauty, love is everywhere. This week I am celebrating Love as Accomplishment (in Emerson getting his first ribbon ever - for backfloating all by his big boy self!)

Happy Love Thursday everybody!

My Newest Obsession

Guilty Pleasures have long existed in my tv and movie worlds, but now, they cross over into the World Wide Web, thanks to YouTube. What a cornucopia of random self-expression-exploitation-information-newsy-gunk (SEEING). I of course am not in this group because the videos I post are just for family and not for the viewing hungry (or more likely bored) public such as me (as a viewer, not as a poster).

Take tonight for instance. After uploading a sweet video of Emerson saying night-night, I blew a half hour just watching videos. Most of which are totally random and really add no value to the world, entertainment or otherwise. But then I came across some real gems:

1. Jennifer Aniston's chat with Oprah - pretty much entertainment value alone as I learned she and Vince are still together (thank goodness), she did not get a boob job and that she's partnering with Glamour Magazine to direct short films about life-changing moments for everyday women like me. Woah. That was worth the 6 minutes and 14 seconds I spent glued to my (you)tube.

2. Manufacturing Beauty - this was a clip that seems to be made by the Dove people (in their Campaign for Real Beauty) and it's really great. It's fast-forward video of a woman getting her hair and make up done and she looks good and all that. But then her image is totally photoshopped - more hair, eyebrow lift, raise cheek bones, plump lips, yadda, yadda, yadda and she now looks like a supermodel. This is nothing new - we all know those supermodel chicks are air-brushed. But a compelling two and half minutes of video.

3. Lazy Monday - HIGHlarious spoof to Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell's Lazy Sunday SNL skit where they rap about the Chroni(what?)cles of Narnia. Produced by (and co-starring) cutie patootie Mark Feuerstein (What Women Want, In Her Shoes) and a buddy of his, the two hit the West Coast and give Andy and Chris a run for their funny.

I can see this is the start of a beautiful friendship...

In Other Blogging News
It may be time for me to lay off the Starbucks. Case in point: Saturday Emerson and I are running errands after his swimming class - where he actually swam (woo-hoo) - and as we drove by a Starbucks my not even 3 year old son said, "Mommy drink!"
Aye, Yaye, Yaye!

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The Good
1. It's almost the weekend.
2. I got a totally cool mini camcorder and made my first video of Em tonight. It's super easy to use. I can't wait to send it out.
3. October nights and mornings - this is why we live in the desert.
4. On Oct. 11 Em made his first tinkle in the potty at school. Awww.

The Bad
1. Emerson has yet to take any real interest in using the facilities at home.
2. The wood chips in Em's playground at school seem to get transported to home in his diaper, butt cheeks, shoes, pants, whatever. We are being taken over by wood chips.
3. Uh-oh. My first film of Em is only 2 minutes but 22MB making e-mailing the file a bit ridiculous.

The Ugly
1. No real ugly right now. What a good thing!

Evening Poem #7

Waiting for the Light to Change

The first thing I notice is her platinum blonde hair
flattening against her brush
Stroke after stroke after stroke.

Thickly smudged kohl
at once defines and defiles her tired eyes
that have seen more heartache than I know.

She takes a long drag on her cigarette
and exhales the failures of her day away
in a stream of smoke that lingers only slightly.

What story would she tell
were she to have the opportunity,
were she to have an audience?

The light turns green and I lurch forward
leaving behind an unanswered question
at one moment so important
only to vanish as I navigate my way home.

Take my hand and follow me
through the brightness of the day.
Open your eyes and take it all in.

Slow down and listen
to the harmonies around you.
They are the symphony of right now.

Stop for a moment and savor this,
for everything we experience is once-in-a-lifetime
never to be repeated in exactly the same way.

Evening Poem #5

Fall

It's the first day of fall in the desert.
We accelerate onto the freeway
and I roll the windows down.

The pureness of the day bursts through
loudly taking over all I can hear.

But it's your squeals and giggles that tickle my ears.
And as I look in the rear view mirror,
the only thing I can see is you smiling.

Evening Poem #4

High Dive

Carefully placing one hand after the other, I make it to the top.
I tug and adjust in all the right places and am ready to go again.

A confidence sweeps over me as I walk to the edge
pausing only to search the swarm of sunbathers for your eyes.

Crouching down, springing up, pushing off
and sliding seamlessly into the cool water
I push all the air out of me.

Decending brings a calmness quickly turned into anxiety.
I am never sure I can make it back to the surface
but the air comes faster to me every time.

Walking back to the the car your hand squeezes my shoulder.
My hair smells faintly of chlorine
and we recount the perfectness of the day.

I don't realize this is the last summer I will do this.
The last summer free of self-consciousness
When girls are girls and boys are boys
and there really isn't any difference.

Evening Poem #3

Imprint

Reaching across decades of memories,
she hands me the flesh-colored circle
hardened with my tiny handprint.

Her eyes are damp, face soft.
Do you remember making this?
Looking at it closely, I do.

Thirty years have passed since I pressed my hand
into the cold, damp clay and held it there,
creating a permanent keepsake of my childhood.

Part of me will always be her baby.
Watching you make your own imprint on this life
I know that part of you will always be mine.

A Poem a Day - My New Personal Challenge

I have been inspired by a super creative woman and mother who also blogs (Christina). She's the one I got the Robert Bly poem from as well as the idea for this latest venture. Bly has a collection of Morning Poems, poems that he wrote at the start of each day. Christina and other readers of hers have taken to the challenge, and I too am going to attempt -- with one small caveat. Those of you who know me, know I am terrible at mornings. So, I am going to try an Evening Poem each day for the rest of the month; the first was my Surrender poem, posted yesterday. Below is my next attempt.

Evening Poem #2

LATE

Checking the clock, my heart accelerates.
Exiting the office shuts down one part of my day;
and with the start of my car, another begins.

Brake lights insinuate a false start;
and the push and pull of rush hour ensues.
My knuckles pale against the steering wheel.

It's one dollar for every minute past 6.

As I race inside, your face brightens
filling me up, filling up my heart.
The clock reads 6:04.

My Second Attempt at Poetry

Surrender

Every day my list grows.
Each item I check off
Celebrated yet diminished
By the additions.

Mundane tasks and errands
Always make the list.
Leaving the important things
Fighting for inclusion.

Tonight I stop the struggle
for a moment of quiet
blanketed by the darkness
whispering lullabies to you.

As I Lay Me Down to Sleep...

...it's the last line that's so important.

Things to Think by Robert Bly

Think in ways you’ve never thought before.
If the phone rings, think of it as carrying a message
Larger than anything you’ve ever heard,
Vaster than a hundred lines of Yeats.

Think that someone may bring a bear to your door,
Maybe wounded and deranged; or think that a moose
Has risen out of the lake, and he’s carrying on his antlers
A child of your own whom you’ve never seen.

When someone knocks on the door, think that he’s about
To give you something large: tell you you’re forgiven,
Or that it’s not necessary to work all the time, or that it’s
Been decided that if you lie down no one will die.

Move Over Gwyneth, I Have My Own Baby Apple

A couple of weeks a new baby entered my life - my mac mini. You could say that I adopted her so that her former parents could trade her in for a newer, younger, faster model. That's sometimes how life works out.

Despite some initial sleepless nights and us getting used to each other, I think we are going to get along just fine. I have even included a picture of her for you all to see.

She's really small, but packs a pretty good punch.

Remember, looks can be deceiving.

What I am Loving Right Now

1. My so scrumptious I can eat him up like a medium cookies and cream gelato amazing wonder kiddo, Emerson. Tonight at dinner the kid just out of the blue sang over half of the alphabet song with no previous attempt, hint or nuthin'. Gosh he is GREAT.

2. Speaking of gelato...the Cookies and Cream homemade gelato from the Gelato Spot. Heaven and better for me than ice cream unless I consume more of it...

3. The Last Kiss Soundtrack cd that Tristin gave me. I can't stop listening to it. Period.

4. Bobby pins. At 34, they are my new hair friend that I seriously wonder where Goody has been hiding my entire life.

5. The ice cold, low fat chocolate milk that I am savoring as I type this.

6. The New Adventures of Old Christine. She just won an Emmy - but I assure you, it's funny.

7. The summer monsoons - with more to come this week and the anticipated conversation with my little dreamboat: "Thunner mommy? Lightming, mommy? No lightming. No lightming mommy."

8. This is Not Chick Lit. Good thing I started reading it since it's on my must list. And it's a must my friends, a must.

Emerson at Two and a Half

Words ramble through your brain
over your tongue
and out into the world
a new one or two or few every day.

Bug bites, scrapes, rubs and cuts
stick to you all over you
blemishing your once-perfect skin
giving you scars and character and experience.

Your need to do it, "I do it Mommy!"
takes over now and competes with me
yielding varying results
the smile of success or the sadness of surrender.

The Wild Things, Curious George, and Thomas the Train
fill up our nights snuggled under covers
while the softness of your voice
follows along with me page after page after page.

You live with passion and excitement
knocking me down as I bend down
hugging your body charging toward me
toward your day
toward your life.

I Just Don't Get It

1. Why is it that when you are most up in arms about what to do with your hair, or you are sick of it, is it that everyone notices how great it looks? Cynthia and I were talking about this on Sunday. And you know what? The compliments dont' really help - they actually only confuse matters. But Cynthia had great hair on Sunday and I had great hair on Friday and I am still not sure what I should do about my bangs.

2. Why aren't movies like Little Miss Sunshine on a wide release schedule?

3. Why have I been feeling really weird and out of it the past few days (hangover symptoms without the booze) and a fever on Sunday? Weirdness, sans fever, persisted today.

4. All the fighting in the world.

5. Trigonometry.

6. Where in the good Lord's name did I put my special contact lens cleaning case?

7. Something keeps grazing the kitchen window and it's not windy out. CREEPY.

8. Why I am so freaking tired.

It Was Just Another Manic Monday

The Bangles had their version, here's mine.

  1. 6:30 a.m. - Rise later than planned.
  2. 6:30 a.m. - 7:15 a.m. - Emerson squeals and hollers through most of the morning.
  3. 7:45 a.m. - Pack up the car and Emerson informs me, "Poopy diaper mommy!"
  4. 7:52 a.m. - Drive to school and change his diaper in school parking lot as his class is already at breakfast which will mean more effort if I take him to his classroom to change him.
  5. 10:30 a.m. - E-mail out to entire department the famous Priority List (it's basically the dpt's list of hot projects and deliverables for the week and it runs about six pages long) only to receive several e-mails from recipients saying things like, "Uhm, are you sure this is the right one? I don't see my project updates). Sure enough, the two hours I put into it on Friday afternoon were gone. Since I don't make it a habit if working hard and then saying, "No MS Word, I don't want to save the changes. Please trash all this work and don't save it in the recycle bin or anything either." I have to believe it was a brief moment of temporary insanity on my part or know that computers can really screw up. They CAN!
  6. 12:11 p.m. - By the narrowest of margins miss any opportunity of going to lunch with anyone and thus run out to get something and eat at my desk.
  7. 2:oo p.m. - Attend a meeting on a project that has had as much luck in getting off the ground as the Brady's had on their ill-fated Hawaiian vacation. This could be the week we pull the plug.
  8. 5:52 p.m. - Cruising down the freeway en route to safely pick up Emerson with a few moments to spare, when out of nowhere brake lights storm the freeway, across all lanes of traffic. Standstill. Thank goodness for cell phones and Gama Kathy who is two minutes from daycare. Agree to meet her in the parking lot so that we don't risk a late pick up fee.
  9. 6:05 p.m. - Arrive in school parking lot only to see that Emerson's BRAND NEW shorts are covered in paint. Nice.
  10. 6:06 - 6:20 p.m. Emerson is only happy if we play 'The Itsy Bitsy Spider' song on my cd over and over and over again. Thus, the reason the repeat button was invented.
  11. 6:20 p.m. - 7:05 p.m. - Emerson is a DREAM BOAT while we are at Best Buy (picking up stuff for work) and Cost Plus (picking up stuff for us).
  12. 7:15 - 8:15 p.m. - Dinner and story time (my favorite part of the day) proves fun and pretty uneventful.
  13. 8:20 p.m. - Begin making copies of disc from department team building day. Start blogging.
  14. 8:40 p.m. - Check laundry and assess damage of load washed and dried while secretly accompanied by a dark purple pen.
  15. 8:50 p.m. - Make a tortilla with warm honey and call it a day.
