Climbing to Great Heights

E's first hike with Mama, North Mountain. It was a beautiful day and he was quite a trooper even if it ended as a bit of a hot, tired and sweaty mess.

E was excited at the outset and boasted that he loved hiking and wanted to do this every Saturday. I was a bit less enthusiastic, saying "that's great, let's see how the day turns out." He took in the cityscape at the first landing, evidenced in today's picture and I encouraged him to go a bit further. He started to complain; his spirit was waning. He asked to turn around before the next landing and I obliged. It was a matter of minutes before a waning spirit turns into an out and out tantrum.

Now, I don't mean to get all "I told you so" with my 5 year old, but when the whining started on the descent and he cried in the car saying, "I don't want to do this EVER AGAIN until I am older." the thought did enter my mind.
